Medical Dermatology Services

Many times, your body can give you an indication of illness, disease and other maladies via your skin. Our board-certified dermatologists will diagnose and treat your skin conditions using medications, surgery and other procedures.

Our physicians are experts in treating a variety of common and rare skin conditions affecting the skin, hair and nails. While there are thousands of diseases that can affect your skin, common conditions fall into one of four categories:

  1. Inflammatory conditions
    • Psoriasis
    • Eczema
    • Dermatitis
    • Rosacea
    • Seborrhea
    • Acne
  2. Skin infections
    • Fungal infections
    • Bacterial infections
    • Viral infections
    • Parasitic infections
  3. Benign growths
    • Warts
    • Cysts
    • Angiomas
    • Skin tags
    • Age spots
    • Sun spots
  4. Malignant growths
    • Actinic keratoses
    • Basal cell skin cancer
    • Squamous cell skin cancer

On-site Pathology

While most dermatology clinics rely on independent laboratories for their pathology support, the Kansas City Skin & Cancer Center has a pathology lab on site and a dermatopathologist on staff, meaning we provide you with the most accurate diagnosis and begin treatment as quickly as possible.

Dr. Kimberly Schoofs, a board-certified dermatopathologist, combines her expertise as a clinician who sees patients and a pathologist who can evaluate and diagnose specimens under a microscope. Dr. Schoofs is able to correlate changes in a patient's skin microscopically and the patient's lesion or rash to render the most accurate diagnosis, which is especially important in complex cases.

On-site pathology is a benefit as well to Dr. Mark Cohen in his use of Mohs surgery on our cancer patients. As Dr. Cohen proceeds with Mohs surgery, he is able to review all of a patient's lab specimens in order to make his surgery especially effective.
